My son received this for his 1st birthday and does not know Dora or Diego yet. He was immediately drawn to the toy and after I wrangled it out of the package, he held it. His torso is a rectangular heavy plastic part. In his back, there is a velcro strip behind which is battery pack, on/off switch and USB cord port. To program child’s name, you install cd to computer (which takes way longer than expected). Then you have to connect Diego to computer via cord and wait for computer to recognize “human interface” hardware. then you can run program, choose child’s name (includes some pretty unusual ones, but they say you can call in if you have one that’s not listed), choose child’s favorite color, food, animal, friend’s name. You can also program child’s bday, wake up time, snack time bedtime (I skipped these). Then Diego will say, Hola xxx, Soy Diego. Come on xx, elrequeste to the rescue. xxx I know you like to eat fruit, I like to eat that too. The voice is clear. When it’s going to turn off, it says Hasta Luego xxx, see you soon.

I guess Diego speaks some Spanglish, but you would think you could choose spanish given that this is a Teddy Ruxpin-ish doll that can be programmed in other ways.

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

This is undeniably cute, however, I think you really need to consider your audience when you buy this. I think that I really want my boys to like “boy” dolls, but they just don’t. This Diego looks like Diego (some of the other Diego dolls are scary) and the voice is really clear and exactly mimics things that would be said in the show, so he is very identifiable. Setting him up with all the personalized info using the included CD installed on my Windows Vista laptop was a piece of cake. You get to choose your child’s name (the list is quite impressive and you can call Fisher Price if your name is not listed) and you also get set him up to “know” and therefore incorporate into the things he says, your child’s favorite color, favorite animal (from the Diego episodes,) favorite food, and the name of a friend. Then you can set your child’s birthdate, wake-up time, school (training) time, meal time, bath “wash” time, and bed time. He will remind the child of those times. This set-up took me about 5 minutes using the CD and then I plugged Diego in and hit download and about a minute later he was ready to go. So, if you have a boy who is more calm and introspective, this might be GREAT for you, but if your boys are like mine, then there just might not be enough action for them to justify paying anywhere near full price. We got a good price, $35, and at the current Amazon price of $25 you cannot go wrong. So, it does what it is supposed to and is cute, but it needs to be for the right child.
